MySpace MP3 Player rumour

Social networking giant and trendsetter to the digital music generation, MySpace has made noises to the tune that it is to release an MP3 player.

After the successful launch of MySpace Music in September of this year, offering music downloads to its millions of subscribers powered by Amazon MP3, MySpace chief exec and co-founder Chris DeWolfe has commented that the site could develop a digital music player.

Speaking at a conference in San Francisco, DeWolfe said, 'it's possible' that MySpace could develop a music-playing device in response to a direct question.

Don't get too trumped up though, as there are no immediate plans to create such a device, with DeWolfe noting that 'right now, we're just focusing on the service'.

Never say never though.

Sanyo PLC-XTC50L Projector

Sanyo PLC-XTC50L Projector

New from Sanyo is the extremely sizeable PLC-XTC50L projector, aimed directly at the high, dare we say commercial, end of the market.

The first projector to feature the 'Auto Lamp Selection System', the XTC50L delivers 6,000 hours of use 'without the need for lamp maintenance', which the company claims is twice as long as conventional one-lamp models.

The system auto selects one of its two lamps to project from based on user preference or pre-programmed settings, or simply if the other lamp fails.

Your £5,000 plus VAT will also buy you a range of compatible short and long throw lens options, horizontal and vertical lens shift and keystone correction.

The PLC-XTC50L goes on sale in January 2009.

Pioneer LX01BD Home Theatre

Pioneer LX01BD Home Theatre

Pioneer first announced its LX01BD home theatre system back in June, as part of its LX 'luxury' range. And now the AV giant has finally confirmed it is to see a UK launch, as a perfect partner to its latest KURO plasma TV range.

The LX01BD is a Profile 1.1 Blu-ray disc spinner delivering 'native' Full HD 1080p playback, with DeepColor support, Bonus View, and dual HDMI in and single HDMI out, enabling connection of the full gamut of Blu-ray compatible kit.

Sonically, the LX01BD features an integrated 5.1-channel amplifier and dodecahedron technology derived satellite speakers that generate sound fields in all directions (we've seen this Pioneer tech in action and trust us, it works).

The technology allows for a phantom centre channel created by the front left and right satellites, with rear left and right speakers and a mighty subwoofer/receiver with dual drive subs to enable powerful handling of lower frequencies rounding out the aural duties.

The LX01BD is of course comfortable handling the latest HD audio formats, from DTS-HD to Dolby TrueHD, and the Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration System (MCACC) calibrates the system's speakers to its environment for optimal sound quality.

The remote control is a LCD touchscreen affair, although you can use your Pioneer TV remote if you prefer via the KURO-LINK option. Long since available in Europe, the LX01BD has now arrived in the UK and will retail at around the £2,000 mark.

Bowers & Wilkins CM Loudspeakers

Bowers & Wilkins CM Loudspeakers

Brit speaker specialist Bowers and Wilkins has added four new models to its longstanding CM Series loudspeaker range, for export to the US.

The new models include a 'seriously grown-up' three-way floorstander, a larger stand-mount model, a new centre channel and the range's first dedicated subwoofer. The new additions extend the range to seven models, while a new polished black gloss finish spruces up the styling.

The CM9 is a three-way floorstander featuring a 25mm aluminium dome tweeter, a 150mm Kevlar FST midrange driver and twin 165mm paper/Kevlar bass drivers. The CM9 is designed to provide a meatier performance than the more diminutive CM7.

The CM5 is a two-way standmount speaker featuring 25mm aluminium dome tweeter and 165mm Kevlar bass/midrange driver.

Specifically for the home theatre market, the CM Centre 2 increases the output and bass extension of the more diminutive CM Centre and features as FST midrange driver to match seamlessly with the new CM9s.

Last in the line-up is the ASW 10cm subwoofer. Sporting a 25cm paper/Kevlar cone bass unit coupled to a massive 500W amplifier, it means customers can now complete a CM Series home cinema system for the first time.

As is traditional with all B&W kit, quality is uppermost in the designers' minds with custom-designed componentry and drive units and real wood finishes of gloss black, rosenut and wengé.

Available now, the CM9 retails at $1,500, the CM5 at $750, the CMC2 at $1,250 and the ASW 10cm at $1,500.

Cowon O2

Cowon O2 PMP

Digital Audio Distribution has announced the launch of the Cowon O2 PMP for sale in the UK.

A 'stunning new fusion of portable and audiovisual technology', the O2 arrives in 16GB and 32GB flavours, each of which features a 'pin sharp' 4.3in 16.7million colour digital TFT LCD screen.

To keep size down, Cowon has opted for solid-state flash memory rather than hard drive based models, as the company claims this is the first time it has become affordable in a full sized PMP.

Compatibility is far reaching with AVI, WMV, ASF, MP4, MATROSKA (MKV), OGM, MPG/MPEG, DAT and MTV video support; and MP3/2/1, WMA, ASF, AC3, FLAC, OGG, M4A, MATROSKA (MKA), TTA, APE, MPC, WV and WAV audio support.

Battery life is a claimed eight hours for video and 18 for audio, while extras like photo and document viewer and mic for recording direct to FLAC shouldn't drain too much power.

Available now, the 16GB model will set you back £209 and the 32GB £249.

Sony Blu-Spec CD

Sony Blu-Spec CD

With DVD-A and SACD flailing helplessly in the music markets, Sony has unveiled a new CD format in the familiar-sounding shape of Blu-spec, clearly inspired and intrinsically linked to its increasingly popular Blu-ray video format.

First announced in Japan, the technology takes advantage of Sony's established Blu-ray Disc expertise to press new high quality discs that somehow maintain compatibility with traditional red-laser CD spinners. And before you ask, no, we don't know how. It seems neither our nor Google's Japanese is good enough to eke out a translation that makes it clear.

Sony promises to have at least 60 titles ready for launch by Christmas Eve (perfect for the last minute Christmas shopper then) from the likes of Miles Davis and ELO, though pricing will range from around £16 to £27 for a single disc, so you'd better really love the album.

Meridian Alfred Dunhill AD88

Meridian Alfred Dunhill AD88

Brit hi-fi guru Meridian has teamed up with the stylists at Alfred Dunhill to create the Meridian Alfred Dunhill AD88 Entertainment System.

In a superb slice of press rhetoric, the AD88 apparently 'exploits Meridian's peerless expertise in digital audio and loudspeaker design to achieve breathtaking musical depth, power, and detail from a single, handsome, superbly finished component no bigger than a desktop humidor'. Cool.

The AD88 sports a state-of-the-art 2-plus-1-channel digital sound system with the DNA of Meridian's flagship reference systems to 'stop the first-time hearer in his tracks'.

Incorporated is a reference-grade Meridian CD and DVD player with FM/AM tuner with advanced reception, iPod docking station and remote control.

Advanced Digital Signal Processing developed expressly for the AD88 promises a wide and lifelike soundstage, with a trio of amplifiers serving up more than 80W of power to the stereo speakers and rear-facing subwoofer.

The casing is cast in metal, braced with nine-layer Finnish birch and is a dense, acoustically inert, internally braced structure with intrinsic cooling system.

A series of smart buttons and OLED screen showing track and station info make up the front of the AD88, alongside a somewhat garish Alfred Dunhill signature.

'Partnering with Alfred Dunhill is an unparalleled opportunity for Meridian to reach new customers: consumers who value unquestionable quality and heirloom status in equal measure,' says Bob Stuart, Co-founder, chairman, and chief technology officer of Meridian Audio Limited.

No word on availability and pricing. We say expect it soon but don't expect it to be cheap.

MP3 Logo Campaign

New consumer friendly MP3 industry logo

In an effort to clear up any confusion for the growing customer base, seven of the UK's biggest music download retailers have launched a campaign and identifying logo that labels music in the MP3 format. Slightly unnecessary you may think, but the move is designed 'to help consumers make the most of the growing availability of music in the universally compatible MP3 format'.

The retailers are: Play.com, HMV.com, 7digital.com, Digitalstores.co.uk, Tescodigital.com, Tunetribe.com and Woolworthsdownload.co.uk.

The easy to identify MP3 logo will show consumers at a glance that downloads will play on every PC, Mac and virtually all digital music players.

Created by ERA Digital, the digital arm of the Entertainment Retailers Association, the launch of the new logo is supported by UK record company trade associate the BPI and is hoped to be a template for an international launch.

Samsung Ultra Thin OLED

Samsung 40in OLED screen so thin it flaps in the wind

We brought you news of Samsung's latest prototype 40in OLED screen unveiling last week, but if you prefer super-thin to super-sized, the Korean giant has you covered.

At the FPD International 2008 show, it unveiled a four-inch, 0.05mm thick display that's so thin it actually flaps around in a breeze, which Samsung handily provided to prove its point.

The screen has a 480x272pixel resolution, 100,000:1 contrast ratio and 200cd/m2 brightness. It made Sony's 0.3mm model look positively portly in comparison.

Not content with that, the company also demo'd a new transparent AMOLED screen, which can - as the image aptly indicates - sit over glass to make moving windows. The application possibilities are simply mind-boggling.

Teufel Audio Brand

Teufel Audio Brand

The German audio brand Teufel has announced it is launching a speaker product range for the UK market, which it is promised will provide for the entire spectrum from iPod speakers to entry-level 5.1 systems and high-end audiophile solutions.

With 30 years of expertise and history, Teufel should be a significant new addition for the consumer and will ruffle the feathers of well-established rivals in Blighty.

On sale directly from the company website, examples include the Motiv 2 2.1 'high-end' desktop speaker system retailing at €299, the Impaq 400 virtual surround sound 2.1 system complete with DVD player and AV receiver at €599, the LT 2 5.1-channel column speaker set at €899 and the System 6 THX Select 5.1-channel system at €1445. Something for everyone then.

The company offers an in-home trial period of its products alongside an eight-week return period. High on style and, apparently, with the sonic credentials to boot, now all we can do is hope the exchange rate sorts itself out so we can nab a bargain.

HDTV Overtakes SDTV

High-Definition screens

It was inevitable as the inexorable march of technology moves on, and it's finally been announced that shipments of High-Definition screens have now surpassed standard definition in 2008.

The current economic slowdown doesn't seem to have affected sales of HDTVs thanks to a drop in retail prices and increased availability, and the technology is enjoying a growth rate of 20 per cent annually.

The figures mean that by 2012 there will be more than 240million units shipped in comparison to 97million last year, while SDTV sales are expected to fall by around 27 per cent year on year.

As a result of this, by 2012 around 50 per cent of all set-top boxes will also be HD-enabled compared to the current figure, which sits at around 20 per cent.

Analyst for iSuppli Sheri Greenspan comments, 'The technology is everywhere these days, on broadcast television, on cable, on satellite, and on the internet. You can't escape hearing about something being broadcast in HD or getting the most out of your HD receiver or the most HD channels available'.

JVC Ceases VHS Player Production

JVC VHS players

The Victor Company of Japan is to immediately stop production of VHS video cassette players.

It's the final company still selling video players, and when existing inventories run out it will signal the end of global sales and the end of an AV era, as VHS finally slips into obsolescence.

The technology, which debuted (the year I was born) in 1976, brought 'cinema' into the home for the first time and signalled an explosion in the popularity of film.

More than 900million VCRs have since been produced globally, with JVC contributing 50million to that sizeable figure. But stats show that with over six million VCRs shipped in 2000, the 2007 sales had plummeted to only 280,000 units.

JVC will continue to produce some hybrid units with a DVD player.

Ofcom To Fast-track London Freeview HD?

Freeview HD

Londoners could receive Freeview HD up to two years ahead of schedule if a proposal for a fast track scheme gets green-lighted, Ofcom has revealed. It could mean those opting to buy a Freeview HD box in the capital would be able to watch the World Cup in HD quality, for free.

In response to a request from the BBC, Ofcom has launched a consultation to look at reassigning some spectrum frequencies to cover certain densely populated areas sooner than originally planned.

Alongside London, Tyne Tees and Ulster were planned for a 2012 Freeview rollout, but the capital has been singled out for the fast track scheme because it is 'one of the metropolitan areas identified by the BBC and one of the most congested geographic areas'. Last week Ofcom announced that ITV, Channel 4 and the BBC were to launch Freeview HD channels in 2009.

The Ofcom consultation on the fast track proposal closes on November 19.

Easy enough to use, you simply connect the Pocket Pico to a compatible media device and power it up - it's good for everything from a PowerPoint presentation to enjoying an impromptu film.

The first pocket projector to use Texas Instruments' DLP Pico Chipset, it delivers a 1,000:1 contrast ratio and even features a pretty pointless 0.5W mono speaker.

It weighs 115g and is battery operated to the tune of two hours on one charge - not bad, but not long enough for some films.

Available from November, Optoma's Pico Pocket Projector will retail at a reasonable £249.

Marantz CD5003

Marantz CD5003

Marantz has brought out a budget CD player in the shape of the CD5003, calling it the baby of the 'Range' line-up but promising it is packed with state-of-the-art engineering to deliver 'new levels of performance for the price'.

The CD5003 uses Marantz's M1 reference standard chassis with a design and construction solid enough to virtually eliminate mechanical vibration that can interfere with audio signals. Under the bonnet sits the company's current feedback HDAM SA-2 modules - the first time they have been used in an entry-level machine. The Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Modules replace single-chip 'off the shelf' amps, operating as a buffer amp and low pass filter to help preserve musical dynamism, structure, tonal quality, speed and timbral accuracy.

Also included is the CS4392 24-bit/192kHz DAC converter from Cirrus Logic, mirror image architecture to ensure symmetry between left and right channels for a perfect stereo image and a 'dependable' CD transport mechanism.

It can play CD-R, CD-RW, MP3 and WMA-enabled discs and displays CD Text like artist and track name on the display. Connectors include coaxial and optical digital outputs with high-grade gold-plated analogue outs.

The Marantz CD5003 is available now for £200.

Denon AV Range Upgrades

Denon Dynamic Volume upgrade

In what is claimed to be a world-first, Denon has added Audyssey's Dynamic Volume technology to its network-enabled AVR-3808, AVR-4308, AVC- and AVP-A1HD designs. Alongside this, owners of the AVR-3808 and AVR-4308 have the opportunity to boost their receivers with Audyssey Dynamic EQ as well as CES HDMI protocol support (these upgrades are already included on the AVC- and AVP-A1HD).

Audyssey Dynamic Volume monitors the volume level of whatever is playing millisecond by millisecond to ensure a constant listening level while optimising dynamic range to preserve the impact.

The system will also adapt the volume level for each source and for different material playing - so no need to change volume as you change album or film. Audyssey Dynamic AQ is a loudness correction technology that solves problems with deteriorating sound quality as volume decreases by taking into account human perception and room acoustics.

The upgrade service is available now, where 'owners can swiftly perform the upgrade, from the comfort of their homes, via the receivers' existing online firmware upgrade function'. The upgrade price sits at £75 for each model. Hit up the Denon website for details.

Bloomingdales Beatles iPod

Bloomingdales Beatles iPod

It was a long-raging debate between the world's favourite technology company - that's Apple by the way - and the record label of the world's favourite band - that's the Beatles and their Apple label, by the way.

But with relations thawed and disputes settled, there is hope that the Fab Four's music back catalogue may soon be sorted for the digital download market. In the meantime, for those who simply cannot wait any longer (and have a surplus of cash to spend), US department store Bloomingdales has unveiled a 'limited edition ultimate collector's box Beatles iPod set'.

Not quite what you may have hoped for however, the set consists of a numbered 120GB iPod in black etched with the Beatles logo on the front and Abbey Road on the back. So far so good. Rather than pre-loaded with tunes though, the set then features 13 Beatles CDs, alongside two masters, the Love CD and an engraved guitar pick. And it's all served up in a nice wooden box.

With 'only' 2,500 on offer, Bloomingdales must be confident of selling them all; otherwise it's hard to fathom the $795 price tag.

Brionvega Radiofonografio RR226

Brionvega RR226

Trust it to fall to the Italians to create something so eye-wateringly beautiful as this modern day redesign of the Radiofonografio, now monikered more simply (but less romantically) the RR226.

The groundbreaking original Radiofonografio was first designed by brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1965 kicked off a home AV revolution as 'musical component robot', featuring radio, amplifiers and record player (45s and 33s) in one designer package.

The 21st Century model has incorporated CD and DVD player into proceedings and has obviously upgraded the technology but otherwise remains as close to the original design as possible. The amplifiers are detachable and so can be moved around to create various configurations both for different sonic effect and also just so you can stick them where they look coolest.

The RR226 was first unveiled in its latest incarnation at the Salone del Mobile in Milan in April, but as yet is not available for sale. We'll let you know exactly when we here it is however, along with what we expect will likely be a heart-stopping price tag.

Amex Digital Blu-ray Drive

Amex BD-RE/-R

Apple CEO Steve Jobs may well have described Blu-ray, quite hilariously, as a 'bag of hurt', but despite the Thin White Duke's assessment of the next-gen disc format, there are plenty of us keen to watch Blu-ray quality flicks on our shiny MacBooks and MacBook Pros.

Which is where Amex steps in with its new USB-equipped external and eminently portable multi-drive that serves up CD, DVD and Blu-ray playback and burning for any USB-compatible PC or Mac - which is pretty much all of them nowadays.

The drive will burn BD-RE/-R (single layer) discs at double speed, with dual layer at real time speed. Slot loading to keep the footprint to a minimum, the Amex drive measures 140x143x16mm and weighs 360grams, so isn't the end of the world to lug around with you.

It comes in black or white (not aluminium encased sadly for those early adopters of the latest gen MacBook), and is on sale across the pond at $289 for the BD playback only model and $389 for the playback and burn version.

HD Freeview

In a move likely to ruffle the feathers of the Freesat brigade, Ofcom has announced that three High-Definition Freeview channels will launch in Blighty before the end of 2009.

New HD channels each from the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 will be offered over an upgraded TV platform, broadcast on the new DVB-T2 standard.

This new standard however means that current equipment will not be compatible, so consumers will once again need to upgrade their AV system to reap the rewards.

New versions of the set-top boxes will be available in time for the staggered roll out, which begins in the Granada region next year and ends in London in 2012.

Ofcom also commented at a possibility of a fourth Freeview HD channel arriving in 2010.

Marantz SA8003 SACD Player & PM8003 Integrated Amp

Marantz SA8003 Super Audio CD spinner and PM8003 integrated amplifier

Marantz has relayed news of its totally revamped mainstream 'Range' series of hi-fi kit with the flagship SA8003 Super Audio CD spinner and PM8003 integrated amplifier.

The SA8003 benefits from 'lessons learnt' during the construction of the £5,000 SA-7S1, and thus is bestowed with the new Marantz solid metal, reference-standard chassis and new front panel design. It's certainly meaty and claims to virtually eliminate mechanical vibration and significantly reduce electromagnetic radiation that buggers up the signal.

Inside there's a Zylon loading mechanism, a 24-bit/192kHz CS4398 DAC with DSD support from Cirrus Logic. Also in there are bespoke film capacitors, Shottky diodes and the proprietary Feedback Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Modules.

All components are housed in a symmetrical circuit with short, direct and mirror imaged signal paths for precise stereo imaging. Gold-plated connections complete the quality, while a USB port allows audiophiles to connect lossless digital files directly to the player's DAC for the best quality playback.

The SA8003 is available in October for £700.

Next up is the Marantz PM8003 integrated amplifier, 'sitting pretty' in the new MI chassis. Capable of delivering over 200 watts across its two channels and has a bespoke toroidal transformer as its beating heart. The low-impedance, wide-bandwidth power supply ensures huge energy reserves with instantaneous current delivery to drive massive speaker loads 'with absolute ease'.

A new dual-mono circuit topology as in the SA8003 provides improved stereo imaging, and features Current Feedback amplification for handling any speaker demands. The PM8003's feedback impedance is so low it means excellent frequency response and range and the 'best possible sound'. Componentry and build mirrors the SACD spinner above in quality, with a current feedback MM phono stage directly plucked from Marantz's £2,500 SC-11S1 Premium range pre-amp.

The PM8003 goes on sale in November for £630.

IXOS XHP280 AV PowerStation

IXOS XHP280 AV PowerStation

IXOS has brought out a new eight-way power distribution unit with mains surge protector in the shape of the XHP280 AV PowerStation.

Designed with room for transformers and power supplies and featuring a mains power switch and LED indicators, it can protect mains, phones, networks and aerials.

The unit sports IXOSAFE.T Level 1 Circuitry with a 3,528-Joule capacity to ensure protection against voltage spikes, with all outlets disconnected if the voltage reaches 330 volts. The RFI and EMI Noise Filter decreases the noise floor by 70dB from 100kHz to 10mHz, preventing 'noise' from entering a connected AV system, which would hinder image and sound quality. With a two-metre mains lead, the IXOS XHP280V can be tucked out of sight, and is available now for £70.
